Lake Virelles, Nature reserve in Chimay, Belgium.
Lake Virelles is an artificial body of water covering about 80 hectares within a larger 130-hectare nature reserve near Chimay. Reed beds, wet meadows, and marshland form the landscape across the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse region.
The lake was created around 1410 to power forges and crafts in the area, serving an industrial purpose for centuries. The Princes of Chimay later transformed it into a recreational and protected natural space.
The Aquascope visitor center shares the story of the lake's water ecosystems through displays and educational programs. You can learn which animals and plants thrive here and how they depend on each other.
You will find bird watching stations around the lake and areas where you can taste local products. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for visiting, especially if you want to observe migratory birds.
The reserve operates through three distinct management zones: a fully protected area, a managed reserve, and a natural park zone. This division allows the site to balance strict conservation with visitor access.
