Pro Patria, Memorial monument at Martyr's Square, Brussels, Belgium
Pro Patria is a monument located at Martyrs' Square in Brussels, featuring a white marble female figure representing freedom. Four mourning angels surround the central statue, each symbolizing different aspects such as battle, victory, sacrifice, and hope.
The monument was built after the Belgian Revolution of 1830 to commemorate 467 people who died in the struggle for independence. Their names are carved into black marble plaques within a crypt beneath the monument.
The monument displays neoclassical design and sculptural works that represent Belgian values and national spirit. When you look at how the different artistic elements work together, you see how the country has chosen to honor its past through combined artistic expression.
Access to the site is available daily at the square, providing an open setting for exploration. Visitors with mobility difficulties should be aware that some areas, especially the underground crypt, are challenging to reach.
Beneath the monument lies a hidden crypt containing 27 marble plaques engraved with the names of the fallen. This underground space remains unknown to many visitors but offers a quiet encounter with history.
