Église Saint-Rémy d'Ottignies, Classical church in Ottignies, Belgium.
Église Saint-Rémy d'Ottignies is a classically designed church in the town of Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve. Its walls combine brick and reddish-brown sandstone blocks at the foundation and exterior, creating a structure marked by balanced proportions and traditional proportions.
A fire destroyed the earlier church building in 1726, leading to the construction of the present structure from 1783 to 1785. Aywières Abbey oversaw the rebuilding process and shaped the final design.
The interior spaces were redesigned in 1972 to meet new demands of Catholic worship. This change shows how religious practice and the way people use the space evolved over time.
This is an active Roman Catholic parish church under the Mechelen-Brussels Archdiocese. You can visit the building and its spaces during regular religious services held throughout the week.
During World War II bombing in 1944, this building withstood the attacks relatively well compared to surrounding structures. It lost only six stained glass windows while buildings nearby suffered far greater destruction.
