Doode Bemde, Nature reserve in Oud-Heverlee and Huldenberg, Belgium.
Doode Bemde is a nature reserve along the Dijle River with over 200 hectares of meadows, wet woodlands, reed beds, and ponds. The area includes walking paths and viewing facilities for visitors interested in exploring these different habitats.
The area was designated as an official protected zone in 1985 after a long period of neglect. The name comes from Dutch and refers to grassland considered unsuitable for farming.
Visitors follow the nine kilometers of walking trails through different habitats and use two observation cabins for bird watching. These facilities let people explore the wildlife without disturbing the animals.
Parking areas are available near access points and sturdy footwear is recommended due to muddy conditions, especially after rainfall. The paths are well-marked, but proper shoes help ensure safe walking.
Beavers have returned to the area and naturally transform the landscape through their dam building. Their work naturally supports water retention and flood control in the reserve.
