Art & History Museum, Archaeological museum in Cinquantenaire Park, Belgium
The Art & History Museum is an archaeological and art museum in Cinquantenaire Park housed within a neoclassical building. It contains four main sections focused on national archaeology, classical antiquity, non-European civilizations, and European decorative arts spanning multiple centuries.
The museum's collections originated during the Burgundian and Habsburg periods and were greatly expanded through major acquisitions by the Kingdom of Belgium in 1847. This established what would become one of the country's leading art historical collections.
The museum displays artifacts from the Middle East, Egyptian mummies, Greek sculptures, Roman objects, Asian art, and Belgian decorative items spanning different periods. Visitors walk through galleries where artistic traditions from multiple cultures and eras are shown side by side.
The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 to 17:00 and weekends from 10:00 to 17:00, with access via Schuman or Merode metro stations. Arriving by metro is the easiest way to reach the park, and it is worth checking opening hours before your visit.
The museum preserves ancient glasswork, prehistoric flint artifacts, and medieval tapestries along with pre-Columbian statues. These objects are distributed across twelve refurbished exhibition galleries and display rare craftsmanship techniques from different continents.
