Elisabeth Park, Protected heritage park in Koekelberg, Belgium.
Elisabeth Park is a protected heritage green space in Koekelberg spanning 17 hectares with a distinctive double avenue running through its center. Sycamore maples and plane trees line this tree-lined walkway, creating a green corridor that structures the park's layout.
Koekelberg's municipal council approved the park in 1868 following engineer Victor Besme's plans for Brussels suburban development. The construction of the Sacred Heart Basilica in the early 1900s on adjacent land reshaped the area around it.
The music kiosk at the heart of the space serves as a focal point where neighbors gather for performances and seasonal celebrations. Local residents use the park throughout the year for community events and social meetings.
The park can be entered from four different points: Avenue du Panthéon, Avenue Émile Bossaert, Avenue des Gloires Nationales, and Boulevard Léopold II. Visitors can choose their entry based on where they are approaching from.
The space was originally planned to house a national pantheon before those designs were abandoned for the Sacred Heart Basilica. This shift reveals how the city's priorities changed in the late 1800s.
