Église Saint-Nicolas de Liège, Catholic parish church in Outremeuse, Belgium
The Church of Saint-Nicolas is a Catholic place of worship in Outremeuse with a three-aisle basilica structure and vaults that organize the interior space. The nave is divided by pillars and the choir sits at the eastern end of the building.
The current building was constructed after an earlier church was destroyed during a siege in 1691. Reconstruction was completed in the early 18th century, and a tower was added to the structure in the middle of the 19th century.
The interior displays a refined baroque altar and paintings by renowned Flemish artists that shape the character of the worship space. These artworks reflect the artistic taste of Liège during the period when the building took its current form.
The church remains active as a parish house of worship, so opening hours can vary with service times. Visitors should keep in mind that access may be limited during religious services and community events.
The building complex sits on the grounds of a former Franciscan monastery, traces of which remain visible today. Parts of the former monastery structure were incorporated into an adjacent youth hostel building and preserved in this way.
