Burgas

Burgas is a port city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, stretching alongside several freshwater lakes. The city combines residential neighborhoods with industrial facilities, while parks and green spaces sit between the built-up areas.

The area developed from a small fishing settlement into a major port during the 19th century after the railway line was built in 1890. The modern city took shape mainly after World War II through industrial expansion.

The name comes from the Greek Pyrgos, meaning tower, referring to a medieval fortification. Today locals use the seafront promenade for walks and meet at the central square.

The central bus station sits near the city garden and connects different city districts with regular lines. Half a day is enough for a visit to walk the waterfront and explore the main areas.

The city hosts one of the largest open-air sand sculpture festivals in Europe, where artists create elaborate figures each summer. These temporary works remain visible on the beach for several months before wind and weather wear them away.
