Basarbovo Monastery

Basarbovo Monastery comprises caves carved directly into limestone cliffs that rise above the Rusenski Lom river. The rock formation contains interconnected chambers and passages that spread across different levels within the stone.

The monastery first appeared in Ottoman records during the 15th century, showing that monks already sought shelter in these remote cliffs. Over the following centuries, the caves served as a continuous refuge for religious communities devoted to prayer and contemplation.

Monks chose these cave dwellings to live apart from the world and practice their faith in solitude. The place still conveys that sense of withdrawal, drawing visitors who seek to understand monastic life away from ordinary settlements.

Reaching the cave chambers involves climbing stone steps carved into the rock, and the route can be steep in places. Wear flat shoes with good grip to safely move through the uneven passages and levels.

The stone walls contain visible remains of ancient seashells, remnants from millions of years ago. These fossils serve as a reminder that the entire area was once covered by water before the sea receded.
