Silistra Province, Administrative province in northeastern Bulgaria
Silistra Province is an administrative region in northeastern Bulgaria that covers roughly 2,800 square kilometers along the Danube River, encompassing seven municipalities with agricultural land and varied terrain. The area is connected by road networks and includes several towns that serve as local economic and social centers.
The territory was part of Romania until border changes in 1940 transferred it to Bulgaria, with formal provincial status established later. This shift shaped how the region developed administratively and economically.
The region is home to Bulgarian, Turkish, and Roma communities whose daily life reflects Orthodox Christian and Muslim traditions through local celebrations and customs. You can see this blend of cultures in the markets and village communities you visit.
The region is accessible through road networks connecting its municipalities, with the Danube River serving as a natural boundary and transportation option. Visitors should expect rural terrain where services and facilities are concentrated in larger towns.
Local communities produce a distinctive apricot brandy that reflects the region's agricultural heritage, while Danube wetlands provide nesting grounds for pelicans and other water birds. These natural areas support rare wildlife that many visitors overlook.
