St. Anastasia Island, Historical island in Burgas Bay, Bulgaria
St. Anastasia Island is a rocky island in Burgas Bay with steep coastal cliffs rising about 12 meters above the sea. Covering roughly nine decares, it holds a medieval church, a lighthouse, and remains of prison structures.
The island served as a monastery from the 12th century and was a religious center. In 1923 it was converted into a prison that held political detainees.
The Ascension Church dates to the 12th century and displays frescoes that remain intact. As the only religious building on a Bulgarian island, it reflects the spiritual importance this place once held.
The island is accessible only by ferry service departing regularly from Burgas Harbor. Check sea conditions before visiting, as waters can be rough.
A French lighthouse built in 1889 stands on the island and was an engineering feat of its time. The structure reflects how important the bay was for maritime traffic during that era.
