Solnitsata, Archaeological site in Provadiya, Bulgaria

Solnitsata is an archaeological site of a prehistoric settlement in Provadia covering 30 hectares of land. It sits directly above a salt deposit and contains the remains of houses, furnaces, and ceramic workshops from thousands of years of human occupation.

The settlement began around 5600 BCE and developed over more than a thousand years. Inhabitants built stone walls for defense and became wealthy through salt trade that reached across the region.

The settlement served as a salt production hub where residents used ceramic vessels to boil brine as their main livelihood. This work shaped how the community lived and organized itself for centuries.

The site has a central settlement area with archaeological layers reaching down 9 meters that reveal much about daily life. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore the remains of houses and production facilities spread across the terrain.

The houses at this settlement had multiple stories and were fitted with massive salt-boiling furnaces that each weighed around one ton. These large-scale devices were installed on upper floors, showing how central salt production was to daily life.
