Kamtchia, Nature reserve at Kamchia River mouth, Bulgaria
Kamtchia is a nature reserve at the mouth of the Kamchia River on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, made up of floodplain forests, wetlands, grasslands, and natural waterways. The area offers a range of habitats that support a wide variety of plant and animal life throughout the year.
The area was given protected status in 1951 to safeguard floodplain forests that once covered much larger stretches of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. This made it one of the first formal steps to protect one of the region's last remaining river delta systems.
The reserve is a key stopover for migratory birds passing between their breeding and wintering grounds. Visitors can spot species that are rarely seen elsewhere along the Black Sea coast.
The best way to explore the reserve is by boat along the Kamchia River, with trips organized by local operators that give clear views of the forested banks. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to spot wildlife at close range.
The reserve is home to rare Colchic forest types that survive in only a handful of places across the region and are adapted to regular flooding. This type of woodland grew from the conditions created where the river meets the coastal plain.
