Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in central Varna, Bulgaria.
The Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox house of worship with three naves and distinctive copper domes located in central Varna. The stone structure draws architectural inspiration from Saint Petersburg's Peterhof Temple and can accommodate many worshippers.
Construction started in 1880 when Prince Alexander I commissioned the project, with architect Maas drafting the design and municipal architect P. Kupka overseeing the work. The cathedral emerged as part of Bulgaria's religious building expansion during that era.
The cathedral serves as the spiritual heart of Varna's Orthodox community and welcomes both worshippers and visitors throughout the year. The religious icons displayed inside reflect the historical ties between Bulgaria and Russia.
The cathedral sits on Vladislav Varnenchik Boulevard and welcomes visitors who wish to observe its religious services held regularly throughout the year. Visiting outside of main service times allows you to explore the interior more freely and respectfully.
The cathedral's construction was funded through international lottery tickets and donations from the community, turning it into a shared endeavor rather than a single patron's project. Interestingly, stones salvaged from the city's old fortification walls were repurposed and incorporated into the new structure.
