Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in central Varna, Bulgaria.
The Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in central Varna, built in stone with three naves and copper-clad domes. It stands on Vladislav Varnenchik Boulevard and its domes make it easy to spot from a distance.
Construction began in 1880, commissioned by Prince Alexander I, with architect Maas drafting the plans and municipal architect P. Kupka overseeing the build on site. The project took shape during the period when Bulgaria, newly liberated from Ottoman rule, was actively building religious monuments.
The cathedral is an active place of worship, regularly attended by the local Orthodox community for Sunday liturgies and religious feasts. Inside, the iconostasis and painted walls follow the visual traditions shared across Bulgarian and Russian Orthodox churches.
The cathedral is in central Varna and easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city center. To visit the interior without interrupting a service, it helps to come between the main morning and evening liturgies.
The building was partly funded through an international lottery, which was an unusual way to raise money for a religious project at the time. Some of the stone used in the walls came from the old city fortifications that were torn down to make way for the new construction.
