Varna Archaeological Museum, Archaeological museum in central Varna, Bulgaria.
Varna Archaeological Museum is housed in a Neo-Renaissance building and displays artifacts spanning from prehistoric times to the Ottoman era. The exhibition covers more than 2,150 square meters, presenting objects from Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and medieval Bulgarian periods.
The museum was established in 1888 as part of the City Library before relocating to a former Girls' School building. That structure was constructed between 1892 and 1898 and has housed the archaeological collection ever since.
The collection reflects religious traditions across different periods, from Byzantine to Bulgarian eras, with hundreds of icons and sacred objects on display. Visitors can observe how artistic styles and spiritual practices evolved through the centuries.
The museum is easily accessible on foot from the city center, with exhibits organized in clear chronological sections. Visitors should plan for two to three hours to explore the collections comfortably without rushing.
The museum holds the Gold of Varna, an extraordinary collection of more than 3,000 gold objects dating to 4600-4200 BCE. These finds rank among the earliest known gold work and reveal the craftsmanship of an ancient civilization that flourished long before the famous Mediterranean cultures.
