Asparuhov most, Cantilever bridge in Varna, Bulgaria
Asparuhov Bridge is a cantilever bridge in Varna that spans the canal connecting Varna Lake to the Black Sea. The structure rises 52 meters above the water and stretches 2050 meters in length with a roadway width of 21 meters.
Construction of the bridge began in 1973 and it opened on September 8, 1976. It represented a major milestone in Bulgarian engineering and infrastructure development.
The bridge connects northern and southern Varna, bringing together people from different neighborhoods who cross it daily. It has become a natural gathering point where locals and visitors pause to take in the water views.
The bridge carries European route E87 and is heavily used by thousands of vehicles daily. It provides the main connection between Varna's center and the Asparuhovo neighborhood, making it especially busy during peak hours.
The bridge was built on six massive cast-in-place piles per support column to handle difficult geological conditions. This elaborate foundation system was necessary to stabilize the structure over the canal's soft soil.
