Sub-Balkan valleys, Mountain valley system between Balkan Mountains and Srednogorie in Bulgaria.
The Sub-Balkan valleys form a system of eleven connected lowland areas stretching from Serbia to the Black Sea through central Bulgaria. Multiple river systems including the Iskyr, Topolnitsa, and Tundzha flow through these valleys and supply water to agricultural lands and settlements.
These valleys played an important role during the 1876 uprising against Ottoman rule, with Koprivshtitsa leading the rebellion. The region was a center of resistance at that time and influenced Bulgaria's liberation movement.
The valleys contain many houses from the National Revival period with distinctive wooden balconies and whitewashed walls. This building style still defines the appearance of towns like Kalofer and Koprivshtitsa today.
The valleys are accessible via multiple routes crossing central Bulgaria. The best time to visit is in spring or autumn when the weather is mild and the landscape looks green.
The valleys contain natural mineral springs and thermal baths scattered from Zlatitsa to Sliven. These springs have been known for centuries and are still used by visitors today.
