Тъмната гора, Protected forest reserve in Western Rhodopes, Bulgaria
Tamna Gora is a protected forest reserve in the Western Rhodopes situated between 1400 and 1600 meters in elevation. Ancient silver firs, beeches, and spruces form dense stands, with individual trees exceeding 50 meters in height.
The reserve was established in 1948 to protect old-growth forests previously known as Karaorman. The name changed to its current designation in 1989.
The forest holds meaning for visitors as a place where centuries-old trees and thriving wildlife offer a connection to the natural world. Local communities view it as part of their region's identity and natural heritage.
Access from Kovachevitsa village follows marked trails to protect the natural environment and preserve the forest. Visitors should prepare for mountainous terrain and changing weather conditions at this elevation.
The reserve contains 92 plant species, with 10 receiving legal protection and two rare varieties listed in the Bulgarian Red Book. This botanical richness makes it a significant location for studying mountain forests.
