Dorkovo Museum, Paleontological museum in Dorkovo, Bulgaria
Dorkovo Museum is a paleontological museum located in a small Bulgarian village and displays fossil remains of over 30 prehistoric animal species discovered at one of the region's largest excavation sites. The collection holds more than 600 bone specimens that have survived through the ages.
The site was populated by prehistoric animals roughly four million years ago, and their fossils were later uncovered through joint Bulgarian-French excavation efforts. The museum itself was established in 2013 as a result of these systematic dig campaigns.
The central exhibition hall features a 3.9-meter-high sculpture of an Anancus arvernensis mastodon, created by sculptors Ivailo Avramov and Teodor Nanev.
Visitors should plan their visit during daytime hours, when natural light best illuminates the exhibits on display. Its proximity to other spa resorts in the region allows the visit to be combined with other activities in the area.
The museum uses audio technology to recreate the calls and sounds of the extinct animals whose fossils are displayed here. This immersive experience allows visitors to explore the prehistoric world through sound.
