Tsepina, Medieval fortress in Dorkovo, Bulgaria.
Tsepina is a ruined medieval fortress near Dorkovo, built on a rocky peak in the Rhodope Mountains at around 1,136 m (3,727 ft) above sea level. Stone walls and foundations are still visible across the site, which sits above the Chepino Valley.
The fortress was built during the Second Bulgarian Empire and served as a key military post in the Rhodope region. Ottoman forces took and destroyed it in 1373 as they moved through the area.
The name Tsepina is thought to come from an old Slavic word meaning split or cleft rock, which fits the shape of the rocky hill it sits on. Local hikers from nearby villages often walk up to the ruins on weekends, making it a living part of the regional landscape.
A paved road leads from Dorkovo to the base of the hill, and from there an unpaved trail climbs steeply to the top. Solid footwear is a good idea, as the path can be slippery and the ascent is fairly demanding.
Archaeological finds from the site show that people lived on this rock long before the medieval fortress was ever built. These traces cover several different periods, making the hill one of the more layered historical sites in the Rhodopes.
