Peristera

Peristera is a medieval fortress on Sveta Petka hill in Peshtera and consists of a citadel, inner city, and various surrounding structures. The site is accessible via clearly marked paths and offers visitors a good overview of how the different areas were organized.

The fortress was built in the medieval period as a defensive structure for the local population and was rebuilt several times over the centuries. A major siege caused significant damage, leading to reinforced defenses and modifications to the entrance design.

Excavations have uncovered pottery, coins, ornaments, and glassware that are now displayed in the local museum. These objects provide insight into the daily lives and craft skills of the people who once inhabited this place.

Visitors will find clear signage throughout the site and a parking area near the main entrance for easy access. The walk uphill is manageable, but sturdy footwear is recommended depending on weather conditions.

Two towers here display an unusual church-like architecture that is not found in other Bulgarian fortifications. This distinctive design suggests the site held particular religious or strategic importance.
