Krichim Reservoir, reservoir in Bulgaria
Krichim Reservoir is a reservoir on the Vacha River, located in the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, not far south of the town of Krichim. The water is held back by a tall dam and sits between forested hillsides, giving the lake a narrow, elongated shape along the river valley.
The dam was completed in 1972 as part of a broader push in Bulgaria to develop hydroelectric power across the Rhodope Mountains. It was built as one node in the Dospat-Vacha Cascade, a system of connected dams along the river that took shape over several decades.
The reservoir draws visitors from nearby towns who come to walk along the shore or spend time outdoors in the Rhodope foothills. The wooded surroundings give the place a withdrawn, natural feel that contrasts with the more built-up areas nearby.
The roads leading to the reservoir wind through mountain terrain, so driving with care is a good idea, especially on narrower stretches coming from Krichim. Walking paths run along parts of the shoreline and offer open views of the water and the hills beyond.
A portion of the water that flows into the reservoir arrives through tunnels redirected from a separate river system higher up in the mountains, not just from the Vacha itself. This kind of inter-basin water transfer is a hidden feature of the cascade that most visitors passing by would never suspect.
