Krichim Monastery

Krichim Monastery is an Orthodox religious community set on the northern slopes of the Rhodope Mountains near the Vacha River. The buildings display traditional Bulgarian church design with stone structures that blend into the mountain landscape.

The monastery was established during Ottoman rule when religious life was restricted in the region. It worked alongside other spiritual centers nearby, including one dedicated to Saint Vrach, to maintain Orthodox faith despite challenging conditions.

The monastery served as a center for maintaining Bulgarian language and culture during the National Revival period. Monks taught here and helped local people preserve their traditions during difficult times.

The monastery sits in a mountainous area and is best reached on foot if you have time for a walk. The paths leading to the site are not always paved, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time for the journey.

The monastery sits near the Vacha Gorge where two Byzantine fortresses stand on opposite banks of the river. These ancient fortifications reveal the strategic importance this area held in earlier centuries.
