Vacha Reservoir, Artificial reservoir in Devin Municipality, Bulgaria

Vacha Reservoir is an artificial reservoir in Devin Municipality that stretches across 1600 meters (about one mile) and sits at an elevation of 540 meters (roughly 1770 feet) in the Rhodope Mountains. Shorelines wind around forested slopes, and narrow inlets cut between the hills where the water remains calm and dark.

The reservoir came into being in 1975 as part of the Dospat-Vacha Cascade project, which reorganized water management in the region. Flooding the valley transformed the landscape into a reservoir that has since supported energy generation and irrigation across southern Bulgaria.

Fishers have come here since the reservoir's early years, keeping alive the Rhodope tradition of angling techniques. On quiet weekends, families sit along the shore and swap stories about notable catches or changes in the water.

Several access points around the water allow visitors to launch boats or fish in spots where the shore is flat enough. Walking trails follow the slopes and offer viewpoints over the water surface, especially on clear mornings.

The facility belongs to a system of cascade reservoirs that move water between basins to power turbines when electricity demand rises. Engineers designed the connection so that flows are directed from one basin to the next, making use of capacity across valleys.
