Dospat-Vacha Cascade, Hydroelectric cascade system in Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria.
The Dospat-Vacha Cascade is a hydroelectric system spanning the western Rhodope Mountains, with five reservoirs and seven power plants distributed across three provinces. The infrastructure uses the region's natural terrain to generate electricity that serves southern Bulgaria.
Construction began in 1963 under Hydrostroy company and concluded with the Tsankov Kamak dam completed in 2010. The decades-long development was central to building Bulgaria's energy infrastructure during the later 20th century.
The National Electricity Company manages this infrastructure project, which represents Bulgarian advancement in sustainable energy production since the mid-20th century.
Views of the cascade are best from the different dams and along the reservoirs, particularly in dry weather. Access to the dam areas is generally possible, but be prepared for limited roads and check ahead for any restrictions.
The Vacha Dam reaches approximately 145 meters in height, making it one of Bulgaria's tallest, while the Tsankov Kamak facility employs a rare double arch design. These technical features make the system noteworthy for Bulgarian engineering achievement.
