Belovo Basilica, 6th century basilica ruins near Golyamo Belovo, Bulgaria
The three-nave basilica measures 28 by 17.15 meters, featuring red brick arches rising above the dense Rhodope mountains forest.
The basilica served a monastery near Lefka fort during the 6th century, at crossroads between Rhodope region, Sofia Plain, and Thracian Plain.
Excavations of this early Christian structure began in 1924, funded by American scholar Thomas Whittemore and led by art historian André Grabar.
Visitors can reach the basilica through a 1.5-hour hike from Golyamo Belovo Village or drive 20 minutes by 4WD vehicle from Belovo.
The basilica contains two rows of four columns with three semicircular apses and a baptistery featuring three semi-domes on its south wall.
