Chaira reservoir, reservoir
Chaira reservoir is a large water storage system in the mountains of Bulgaria that provides water for electricity generation and irrigation. The concrete dam holds back an extensive lake in a mountain valley, from which water flows to nearby power plants including Sestrimo and Momina Klisura.
Construction of the reservoir began in the 1960s and took decades to complete before becoming part of Bulgaria's energy system. Over time, the facility has been upgraded to improve efficiency and safety while meeting the country's varying electricity demands.
Visiting the reservoir is best on clear days when paths along the shores are accessible and you can take in the mountain landscape. Prepare for hilly terrain and keep in mind that weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains.
The system can pump water back into the reservoir at night, functioning like a giant battery for storing energy. This reversible capability allows it to generate electricity during peak demand times or store excess power from other sources.
