Thracian Tomb and Sanctuary, Ancient tomb and sanctuary in Pomorie, Bulgaria.
The Thracian Tomb is an underground burial chamber reached by a 22-meter corridor that opens into a circular room nearly 12 meters across. A hollow column stands at the center of this chamber.
Built between the 2nd and 4th centuries, the tomb blends Roman and Thracian building methods. This mix reflects how both cultures met and influenced each other in this region.
The five niches around the chamber held funeral urns and statues, serving as a place where family members could honor their deceased.
The tomb sits about 300 meters from the main road between Burgas and Pomorie, making it a short walk to reach. Plan your visit between April and October when access is available.
The tall column at the center once contained a spiral staircase that led from inside the chamber up to the surface of the burial mound above. This shows how the builders solved the problem of accessing and sealing the tomb.
