Vidin Fortress, Medieval fortress in Vidin, Bulgaria.
Vidin Fortress is a medieval stronghold on the Danube with two concentric curtain walls and nine towers distributed throughout its layout. Three of these towers still stand at their original medieval height, defining the structure's silhouette.
The fortress grew from the ruins of Roman castell Bononia that had occupied this site since ancient times. Tsar Ivan Stratsimir expanded and reinforced it in the 14th century, creating the structure visible today.
The fortress name comes from Vida, a Bulgarian noblewoman whose story remains woven into local memory and identity. Walking through the gates, visitors sense how this place connects to the people who built and defended it.
The site sits directly on the riverbank and is easily reached from the city center. Wear sturdy shoes since pathways cross uneven ground and include stairs throughout the grounds.
During summer months, the fortress becomes a stage for theatrical performances by Bulgarian artists. This use brings together history and contemporary culture in an unexpected way.
