The museum was founded in 1997 and initially located in the Jardins neighborhood before moving to Pinheiros in 2008. Architect Luiz Fernando Rocco designed the building to connect the urban environment with traditional Brazilian handcrafted items.
The museum displays handcrafted objects from different Brazilian regions and explains the traditional techniques behind them. Visitors can see how these skills remain part of daily life and community identity for artisans across the country.
The museum is located in the Pinheiros neighborhood near Faria Lima metro station and is easy to access on foot. The entrance plaza aligns with street level, making it fully accessible to all visitors.
Every two years the museum holds the Objeto Brasileiro Award, recognizing the best work by artists and artisans from across Brazil. The winning pieces are then featured in exhibitions that gain attention throughout the country.
