Engenho Central de Pindaré-Mirim

The Engenho Central de Pindaré-Mirim is a former sugar mill in Maranhão with solid brick walls and a tall chimney dominating the structure. The building contains multiple levels with rooms that once housed machinery and processing facilities for sugar production.

The mill was established in 1884 by the Maranhão Agricultural Progress Company and imported machinery from Liverpool to operate. It continued sugar production for several decades before operations ceased in the early 1910s.

The building now serves as a community cultural space hosting exhibitions about local traditions and regional crafts. It functions as a meeting point where residents and visitors connect with the area's heritage and contemporary artistic expressions.

The site lies several hours inland from the coast and is reachable by car through the region. Today it is easily accessible for visitors to explore the interior spaces and the grounds surrounding the structure.

The facility was an early adopter of electric lighting in Brazil during the late 1880s, ahead of most other industrial sites. This technological choice reveals how forward-thinking the mill operators were compared to their contemporaries.
