The sugar mill, established in 1884 by the Maranhão Agricultural Progress Company, operated until 1914 with machinery imported from Liverpool, England.
The building now functions as the Engenho Central Cultural Center, offering exhibitions about local traditions, a library, and community activities.
Located 255 kilometers from São Luís, the former sugar mill includes a 13-kilometer railway that connected the facility to sugarcane plantations.
This industrial complex implemented one of Brazil's first electric lighting systems in 1883, marking a technological advancement for the region.
