Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Federal police force in Ottawa, Canada
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is a national law enforcement organization responsible for federal duties, criminal investigations and border protection throughout Canada. The force employs around 30,000 members and operates offices in rural and urban communities from coast to coast.
The organization formed in 1873 as the North-West Mounted Police to maintain order during western expansion and protect communities in remote territories. Over the following decades it gradually assumed duties at national level and became the central law enforcement body of the country.
The red serge tunic, Stetson hat and riding boots appear as familiar symbols on currency and at national ceremonies across the country. Mounted formations perform traditional drills that crowds watch at parades and public events held throughout the year.
The organization provides policing services to eight provinces, three territories and over 150 municipalities through detachments spread across rural and urban areas. Visitors can attend public events or ceremonies at some locations held at various times throughout the year.
All members complete 26 weeks of rigorous training at the academy in Regina, Saskatchewan, including equestrian courses and bilingual communication instruction. The riding school maintains a breeding program for horses specially trained for ceremonial duties and patrols in difficult terrain.
