Prince Edward County, Single-tier municipality in Southern Ontario, Canada
Prince Edward County is a single-tier municipality in southeastern Ontario situated on a headland between Lake Ontario and the Bay of Quinte. The municipality covers roughly 1050 square kilometers and includes a shoreline with sandy beaches, flat farmland and wooded areas.
The administrative unit received its name in 1792 after Prince Edward Augustus, father of Queen Victoria, who commanded British forces in North America. The Murray Canal opened in 1889 and linked the Bay of Quinte to Lake Ontario, turning the region into a complete island.
Vineyards line the low slopes and old stone walls that recall earlier farming patterns. Many wineries offer tastings in converted barns or heritage houses where visitors can learn about local grape varieties.
The two provincial parks on the southern shore attract roughly 600000 visitors each year and offer camping areas as well as water activities. In summer the beaches and wineries become busy, while spring and autumn provide quieter conditions for exploring.
The Murray Canal turns this administrative area into a true island by linking the Bay of Quinte directly to Lake Ontario. The waterway is only about eight kilometers long and allows boaters a shortcut between the two bodies of water.
