Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, Regional airport on Toronto Islands, Canada
Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is a regional airport on Toronto Islands handling commercial and private aircraft. The terminal sits on an island and connects to mainland Toronto through an underwater pedestrian tunnel.
Toronto Harbour Commission completed construction in 1939 with plans for the site to serve as the city's main aviation center. The facility later ceded that role to Malton Airport, now known as Toronto Pearson.
The airport bears the name of Canadian World War I flying ace Billy Bishop, who received the Victoria Cross for his military accomplishments.
The airport operates daily from five in the morning until eleven at night and serves more than twenty destinations in Canada and the United States. Passengers reach the terminal on foot through the tunnel or by taking the ferry that runs alongside.
The airport honors Canadian World War I fighter pilot Billy Bishop, who earned the Victoria Cross for his service. Alongside the pedestrian tunnel, a ferry also runs, making this one of the few airports worldwide with two ways to cross water.
