Hanlan's Point Stadium, Baseball stadium on Toronto Islands, Canada
Hanlan's Point Stadium was a baseball stadium on the Toronto Islands in Canada, built with a steel frame and covered seating along the harbor's edge. The grounds also contained a cycling track, making the site a multi-sport venue rather than a simple ballpark.
The stadium opened in 1897 as the home field for the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team, replacing their old grounds near the Don River. It was torn down after the team moved to the mainland side of Toronto in 1909.
The stadium was one of the few sports venues in North America where fans arrived by ferry, giving a game day the feel of a short trip rather than a simple outing. That island setting made attending a match here something people remembered well after the season ended.
The stadium no longer exists, but the area on the Toronto Islands is now part of a park reachable by ferry from the Toronto waterfront. Anyone visiting the island should check ferry times in advance, as the boat is the only way to get there.
In 1914, a young Babe Ruth played here and hit what is widely considered his first professional home run, which flew directly into the harbor water. The ball was never recovered, sinking into Toronto Bay before anyone could retrieve it.
