Westmount, Residential suburb in Montreal Island, Canada.
Westmount is a residential suburb on Montreal Island in the Urban agglomeration of Montreal, Canada, spreading across the gentle slopes of Mount Royal. Stone mansions line streets shaded by old trees, while small parks and green spaces sit tucked between the residential blocks.
The settlement was founded in 1874 as the Village of Notre Dame de Grace and changed its name to Côte St Antoine in 1890. It received its current name in 1895 and developed into an independent suburb with its own administration.
The name comes from its western position on the mountain and reflects the anglophone character still present in daily life. French and English both appear on signs and in conversation, with many residents moving easily between the two languages throughout their day.
The streets are easy to walk, though most routes follow the hillside and involve gentle slopes. Many areas remain open in winter, though visitors should watch for snow and ice on the ground.
The municipality runs its own electricity grid through Westmount Light & Power, which has served the local population since the early 1900s. This independence sets it apart from most other suburbs in the region.
