Westmount Summit, Summit in Westmount, Canada.
Westmount Summit is a wooded hill made of intrusive rock, located within the city of Westmount on the Island of Montreal. Natural foot trails run through the forest and open onto a few viewpoints where the urban landscape stretches out below.
The land was given to McGill University in 1895 by a benefactor who intended it for an astronomical observatory, a project that never moved forward. Westmount bought the property in 1940 and turned it into a public park open to all residents.
The Summit sits at the heart of Westmount, a wealthy English-speaking enclave within Montreal, and the park reflects the neighborhood's long tradition of protecting green land inside the city. Locals walk here on weekday mornings as often as on weekends, treating the forest trails as an extension of their daily routine.
The trails are unpaved and can get slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear makes the walk more comfortable. Dogs must be kept on a leash from April through June to protect birds during nesting season.
The observatory that was planned for this site was never built, and the land sat largely undeveloped for decades before becoming a park. That long period without construction is part of why the forest here feels older and denser than most urban green spaces nearby.
