St. Mary's Basilica, Gothic Revival minor basilica in downtown Halifax, Canada
The basilica features a 189-foot granite spire, triple portal entrance, and Gothic Revival elements including groin vaulting and decorative stone carvings throughout the structure.
Construction began in 1820 with a wooden structure, later transformed into stone, and the basilica received its official consecration in 1899 under Archbishop Thomas Connolly.
The basilica obtained its enhanced status in 1950 from Pope Pius XII, marking its central role in Nova Scotia's religious development as one of Canada's first Catholic cathedrals.
Located at 1508 Barrington Street at Spring Garden Road, the basilica provides guided tours and includes facilities for wheelchair access throughout the building.
The walls contain glass fragments from the 1917 Halifax Explosion, while current restoration work removes white paint layers to reveal original murals beneath.
