Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station, Nuclear power station in Musquash Parish, New Brunswick
Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station is a nuclear power plant situated on the shores of the Bay of Fundy, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Saint John in New Brunswick. The facility operates a single CANDU reactor with a capacity of around 660 megawatts, supplying electricity to homes and businesses across the region.
Planning for this facility began in the 1950s, with construction starting in the 1970s and operations commencing in 1983. From 2008 to 2012, the plant underwent a major refurbishment to extend its operational life and modernize safety systems.
The name refers to a historic French settlement in the region. Today the facility itself is a recognized landmark for local residents, who view it as part of their daily energy supply and stay informed about its operations.
The site sits on a coastal location with ocean views and is surrounded by security fencing with clear signage visible to visitors. The plant is not open for tours, but information about operations and safety measures is available online, and the facility regularly holds community engagement events.
This is the only CANDU reactor on Canada's east coast and the only nuclear facility in Atlantic Canada outside Ontario. After a challenging refurbishment from 2008 to 2012, the plant is licensed through 2032 and is currently exploring small modular reactors for the site.
