The residence at 24 Sussex Drive is a limestone mansion in Ottawa with 34 rooms spread across several floors. The property sits near the banks of the Ottawa River and combines Norman architecture with expansive garden grounds.
Joseph Merrill Currier commissioned this house in 1868 as a wedding gift for his wife Hannah. Since 1951, the building has served as the official residence for Canada's prime ministers.
Joseph Merrill Currier named the house Gorffwysfa, Welsh for "place of rest", for his wife Hannah. In 1870 he added a ballroom so the house could host a visit by Prince Arthur, later Duke of Connaught. The building has not been used as a residence since 2015.
The residence is not open to visitors and has not been lived in since 2015; it stands empty while renovation plans are prepared. It sits next to the French embassy, opposite the main entrance of Rideau Hall, and the grounds are enclosed by fencing and gates. The house can only be seen from the street outside.
Despite its role as a government residence, the building remains primarily a private home without official ceremonial rooms. The prime minister receives official guests at other locations in the capital.
