24 Sussex Drive, Official residence in Ottawa, Canada
The residence at 24 Sussex Drive is a limestone mansion in Ottawa with 34 rooms spread across several floors. The property sits near the banks of the Ottawa River and combines Norman architecture with expansive garden grounds.
Joseph Merrill Currier commissioned this house in 1868 as a wedding gift for his wife Hannah. Since 1951, the building has served as the official residence for Canada's prime ministers.
The name Gorffwysfa comes from Welsh and means place of peace, chosen by the builder for his wife Hannah. Today, artworks and furniture from the Crown Collection connect visitors to Canada's heritage and blend tradition with everyday life in the house.
The property is not open for tours and remains a private living space. From outside, visitors can view the facade and gardens from the public walkway along the river.
Despite its role as a government residence, the building remains primarily a private home without official ceremonial rooms. The prime minister receives official guests at other locations in the capital.
