Minto Bridges, Metal truss bridge in Ottawa, Canada
Minto Bridges consist of three connected steel truss sections spanning the Rideau River. They link Union Street to Green Island and Maple Island, forming a continuous passage across the water.
Built between 1900 and 1902 by the Dominion Bridge Company from Montreal, these structures formed part of a ceremonial route. This route connected Rideau Hall with Parliament Hill during Canada's early 1900s.
The bridges carry the name of a former Governor General, with commemorative plaques marking this connection at both ends. These details help visitors understand the site's role in Canada's historical landscape.
The central section provides direct access to Green Island, with additional spans extending toward Maple Island. The walkway accommodates pedestrians and cyclists crossing the river comfortably.
The pedestrian railings display a distinctive arch lattice pattern featuring curved bars that form gothic arches along the top. This decorative element makes the crossing a visual landmark that stands apart from typical river spans.
