Haliburton County, Administrative county in Central Ontario, Canada.
Haliburton County is an administrative region in Central Ontario that covers a large area of varied terrain. It is shaped by numerous lakes, extensive forests, and the Canadian Shield geological formation, which defines its natural landscape.
The region was established in 1874 as a provisional county and took its name from Thomas Chandler Haliburton, the first chairman of the Canadian Land and Emigration Company. This founding was part of the settlement and development of Central Ontario.
The region is known as a creative hub, with galleries and artist studios scattered throughout the area. The Haliburton School of Art + Design draws students and shapes how people experience the place today.
The region is made up of four municipalities: Algonquin Highlands, Dysart et al, Highlands East, and Minden Hills, with Minden Hills as the administrative center. Visitors should plan their movements with this layout in mind, as the communities are spread across the territory.
The Haliburton Scout Reserve, founded in 1967, is Canada's largest scout reserve and North America's third-largest outdoor scouting facility. This major facility often goes unnoticed by visitors, despite its significance to the region's recreational landscape.
