St. Michael's Basilica

St. Michael's Basilica stands on Howard Street, constructed with sandstone blocks featuring a copper-roofed spire and twenty-eight marble-faced columns supporting a vaulted ceiling.

The basilica, built between 1903 and 1922, replaced a previous structure destroyed by fire in 1878 and served as the Episcopal seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chatham.

The basilica displays numerous stained glass windows created by artists Guido Nincheri and Matthew Martirano, reflecting the religious traditions of the local Catholic community.

The religious structure accommodates 1,200 people and includes a museum that presents exhibits about the history of the church and the surrounding region.

The bells of St. Michael's Basilica mark important events throughout the year, with their sounds reaching across the Miramichi River from their elevated position.
