Miramichi

Miramichi is a city in northeastern New Brunswick that stretches along the Miramichi River, merging the former towns of Newcastle and Chatham into one municipality. It functions as the administrative center for Northumberland County and hosts hospitals, schools, government offices, and retail services throughout its neighborhoods.

The catastrophic fire of 1825 destroyed much of the region and prompted the rebuilding of Newcastle under the direction of Scottish architect William Murray. This reconstruction shaped the city's character and demonstrated how the community recovered from the disaster.

The Miramichi Irish Festival and Folksong Festival reflect the strong Irish roots that shaped this community's character over generations. Local First Nations gatherings add indigenous traditions to the cultural calendar, showing the diverse heritage visitors encounter throughout the year.

The city is accessible via Routes 8 and 11, making it straightforward to navigate when arriving from outside. Parking is typically available throughout the area, and walking distances to shops and services are manageable in most neighborhoods.

The Miramichi River supports a substantial Atlantic salmon population, enabling both commercial fishing and recreational angling year-round. This resource draws anglers from across the region and remains central to the local economy and outdoor traditions.
