Tribute Communities Centre, Multi-purpose arena in downtown Oshawa, Canada
The Tribute Communities Centre is a multi-purpose arena in downtown Oshawa, Ontario. The building contains a main rink for hockey and lacrosse, a secondary community rink, a restaurant, private suites, club seats, a retail store, and the local sports hall of fame.
The arena opened in November 2006 to replace the older Oshawa Civic Auditorium, and General Motors bought the naming rights that same year. After a decade, the name changed to Tribute Communities Centre on November 1, 2016, under a new ten-year sponsorship agreement.
The Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame is housed right inside the building, so guests can walk past local memorabilia before finding their seats. On game nights, young fans wearing Generals jerseys fill the concourse and give the place the feel of a neighbourhood hockey meeting point.
The venue sits in the downtown core, so walking or taking local streets is the easiest way to reach it from nearby hotels and restaurants. Large events often mean crowded sidewalks and slower vehicle traffic, so allow yourself a little extra time to get inside.
During the 2015 Pan American Games, the arena was temporarily called the Oshawa Sports Centre and set up for only about 3,000 spectators per session. It also once hosted a CrossFit Invitational, with competitors from several countries using the venue for a non-traditional indoor event.
