Fort Frederick, Military fort in Kingston, Canada
Fort Frederick is a military fort in Kingston featuring a distinctive Martello tower as its main structure. The tower has a base diameter of about 18 meters (59 feet) and stands roughly 14 meters (46 feet) high on Point Frederick.
The fort was built during the War of 1812 and successfully defended against an American naval squadron under Commodore Isaac Chauncey. This defensive success made it an important site in Kingston's military history during that conflict.
The Royal Military College Museum inside the fort displays military objects and documents from Canada's early defense development. Visitors can see how the country built its coastal fortifications through these preserved items.
Access to the fort is arranged through the Royal Military College of Canada and guided tours are available through the museum. Visitors should check in advance when tours are offered and how to arrange their visit.
Alexander Mackenzie, who later became Canada's second prime minister, worked as a construction foreman during the Martello tower's building. His early involvement in this project connected him to Canada's military heritage before his political career.
