Shoal Tower, Military fortification in Kingston Harbour, Canada
The circular stone defensive tower rises from Kingston Harbour with thick limestone walls designed to withstand artillery attacks during the nineteenth century.
British military engineers constructed this defensive structure between 1846 and 1847 during rising tensions with the United States over territorial disputes.
The tower represents one of four Martello towers in Kingston that demonstrate the military architectural practices used to protect Canadian waterways.
Located directly opposite Kingston City Hall, the tower provides views across the harbor and marks the entrance to the Rideau Canal system.
The structure stands entirely surrounded by water and features submerged rubble foundations that support its massive round walls above the harbor surface.
