Koffler Scientific Reserve, Research station in King, Canada.
The Koffler Scientific Reserve is a research station on Ontario's Oak Ridges Moraine, covering forests of maple, beech, and hemlock. The property includes laboratories and residential spaces for researchers and students, as well as a network of public trails open to hikers.
The land was farmed from the 1880s and later became a horse estate in the 1950s before the Koffler family purchased it in 1969. They turned it into a facility dedicated to environmental research and education.
The reserve is a place where science happens in the open, and visitors walking the trails may come across field equipment or marked plots used in ongoing studies. This mix of public access and active research gives the site a quality that few natural areas offer.
The public trails are open year-round, though conditions can change a lot depending on the season. Some parts of the property may be off-limits during active research, so it is worth reaching out before your visit to know what is accessible.
The old horse barns on the property were converted into working laboratories, and some original structural elements from their days as a stable are still visible alongside modern research equipment. This makes them one of the more unusual places to conduct field science in Ontario.
