Markham Museum, History museum in Markham, Canada.
Markham Museum is a collection of around 30 preserved buildings spread across a large property that showcases historical homes and workplaces. The structures include residences, barns, a train station, and a schoolhouse representing different periods.
The site developed in the early 1800s with its oldest structures dating to the 1820s. Most buildings were moved here from their original locations throughout Markham to preserve the area's heritage.
The site documents how Markham transformed from a farming community into an urban area through its restored buildings and period settings. You can walk through homes and workplaces to understand daily life in different eras.
The museum is open year-round and offers guided tours as well as educational programs for different interests. The grounds are spread out, so allow plenty of time for your visit and wear comfortable shoes.
A fascinating feature is that nearly every building was moved here from elsewhere in Markham to save them from demolition. Only the Mount Joy School building from 1907 stood at the site originally.
