Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, First Nation band in south-central Ontario, Canada
The Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation is an Indigenous community in south-central Ontario that manages approximately 2,400 hectares of land near Brantford. Their territory spans across sections in Tuscarora and Oneida townships and serves as the homeland for their community members.
The group received approximately 1,900 hectares in 1848 from the Six Nations Confederacy as compensation for British land purchases dating back to 1784. This land grant marked a significant moment in the nation's effort to reestablish itself after decades of displacement and land loss.
The nation honors Ojibwe traditions through regular community gatherings, language instruction, and seasonal celebrations held at the community center. Visitors can witness how these cultural practices remain woven into the daily life of the community.
The community center offers administrative services, cultural programs, and facilities open to visitors interested in learning about the nation. It is best to inquire ahead about access to certain areas and any ongoing community events during your visit.
The nation received a settlement of approximately 145 million Canadian dollars in 2010 for historic land claims related to territory where Toronto now stands. This substantial settlement acknowledged the extent of land loss that ancestors of the community experienced from colonial land purchases.
